She was the daughter of Beverly an housewife and Thad an officer in the US Navy. She is the mother of a brother, and three sisters. Her father was a diplomat, and family members moved often. They resided in a variety of countries around the globe which included Germany, Japan, Greece, and Germany. Harden was a student at Surrattsville High School in Clinton before settling in Maryland. In 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin where she earned her bachelor's degree in theatre. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 in order to complete her MFA.
